Catnip is a member of the mint family. Its leaves and stems contain a chemical called nepetalactone, which has a pheromone effect on cats. Cat nip works on all cats, from our domestic kitties to their big-cat cousins in the wild. While kittens under about 6 months old and certain adult cats are immune to its effects, most of them just go nuts for catnip, yet it's non-addictive and has no harmful effects on the cat -- unless you count silly behavior and humiliation as a side effect! It’s all harmless fun, and the effect only lasts about 10 minutes. Interestingly, even cats with no sense of smell will react to catnip.
