Did you know? What we refer to as "declawing" is actually surgical amputation of a cat's fingers at the first joint. It is illegal and considered a form of cruelty in much of the world because of the extreme pain it causes cats. This pain causes the cat to shift his weight off the painful toes onto the "heels" of his paws, putting unnatural pressure on leg joints and tendons. In severe cases, this can cause the cat to become unable to walk at all. The pain may also cause a cat to forgo using the litter box because it hurts to dig, or to become more aggressive with biting when his primary line of defense is taken away from him. Many is the cat who was cruelly declawed for "convenience" sake at his owner's whim, only to find himself dumped at a shelter for "bad" behavior that is not his fault.
