What to Look For In a Cat Tree
A quality cat tree is no small investment, but it will make a world of difference in the happiness of your life with your cat. But how do you know which one is right for you? Here's a checklist of things to consider when adding a cat tree to your home:
- Size - The tree needs to be large enough to accommodate the cat(s) in your household, yet small enough to also fit into the space you have for it. If your cat shows a fondness for climbing things, a good cat tree needs to be high enough to give him good elevation. You may need to supplement the tree with some cat shelving placed high on the walls so kitty has a "path" up high to follow.
- Location - If you will be positioning the tree near a window so your cats can see out, make sure it has platforms above window height where they can perch. Some trees offer food dishes in the platforms so you can feed your cat up out of the reach of the family dog; if you're doing this, make sure the platform with the dish is high enough to keep Bowser away from it.
- Material - Your cats will also use this tree for scratching, so get one with a good scratching surface they like. Not all cats like carpeted scratching surfaces; some prefer sisal, rope, or even corrugated cardboard. Knowing your cat's preference will help you choose the right trunk material.
- Sturdiness - In addition to finding the right size tree for your cats, you'll also want to make sure the tree is solidly built so it doesn't topple during kitty roughhousing. Even if you have a nice, quiet cat who doesn't chase and play with housemates, the tree should still be sturdy enough so it won't tip over when the cat climbs it. Cats learn quickly: if it falls over while the cat's climbing or playing on it, you'll not see kitty using that tree again!
- Features - Many cat trees also offer attached toys your cat can play with. Some may dangle, others may be a puzzle-type toy with holes the cat can reach through to "hunt" something inside. Still others have the feeding bowls mentioned above, "nests" where cats can hide, or perches for them to survey their domain. The right cat tree will be a veritable kitty heaven!
- Appearance - To keep you happy as well as your cat, find a cat tree that also looks attractive in your décor. The selection of trees we offer give you plenty of options in color, style, materials, and height to meet your -- and your cats' -- every need!
