Memorial for my beloved cat Vixen
1988-2012

It's only natural that old maid cat ladies will eventually have some senior cats.  If you do, feel free to share your expertise here.  Or ask your questions of the rest of the community.  We old maid cat ladies have to stick together!

Specific topic suggestions:

  • What do you feed your senior cats?
  • What litter box issues do your senior cats have?
  • Do your senior cats groom themselves regularly, or do you need to help them?  If so, what do you do?
  • Do you give your senior cats any special types of supplements?
  • At what age do our cats become "senior" cats?  Is there a "geriatric" level beyond that, and if so, what age starts that?

I have 2 14 year olds and one 15 year old. I recently had a 10 year old pass that had acute kidney failure. After reading about it, I learned that it is important for a cat to have more than just dry food. Having wet AND dry food helps keep their body hydrated, and can help prevent kidney disease. So I have added wet food now to my 3 older "girls." I just feel bad that I lost my precious Buddy. My 15 yr old does not groom well, and bites me when I try to groom her, so I have had to had her shaved periodically (she has long hair) to keep the mats from getting too bad.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss, Beth. It never gets easier to say goodbye to our beloved cats. A lot of older cats have kidney issues; my 22-year-old tortoiseshell eats only a special kidney diet from her vet, both in wet and dry foods. She's always been very diligent about drinking water, and will tell me if her water bowl gets about half empty. She prefers the chilled, filtered water from the refrigerator, of course! Keeping a clean litter box for them is also important, as some cats will hold it too long if they don't have a clean box. That can lead to kidney or bladder stones, which are very painful. When I had two cats, I got a 2nd litter box, thinking that each would use their own box. What I found was that both of them peed in one box and pooped in the other one.

About OldMaidCatLady.com

About OldMaidCatLady.com

We're a small business, founded by a genuine old maid cat lady who loves her cats the same as if they were her children, just like you do yours. All products are shipped directly to you from our suppliers; we don't maintain any inventory. This eliminates double shipping, warehousing and staffing that would drive up costs, allowing us to price our items as reasonably as possible. When it comes to shipping, we charge you only what our suppliers charge us to ship the items to you. Those retailers who offer you "free" shipping are only raising their prices to cover the cost of shipping, and we'd rather be honest with you about it. If our suppliers include shipping in the prices of the items, we offer the same to you. We try to treat all our customers the way we'd like to be treated ourselves, and appreciate your taking the time to get to know us a little. If you'd like to know more, click on the "About Us" link in the menu.
