About cigarette cards: Cigarette manufacturers began using trading cards to reinforce their packaging and advertiser their brands around 1875. Smokers would try to collect a complete set of 25-50 or more cards in various subject themes. The practice was discontinued in the 1940s to conserve paper during World War II, and never returned until R.J. Reynolds introduced a line for its Doral brand in 2000.
